Later in the program, an interview with Dean for the Boston University School of Public Health Dr. Sandro Galea. Dr. Galea discussed his presentation at NACCHO Annual 2017 on the rising costs of healthcare per capita in the US versus other developed nations around the world. He also discussed health outcomes and how those outcomes are predicted by zip code.

They discussed his time as a health officer in Illinois where Dr. Bhatt was instrumental in the work of Healthy Chicago. They also discuss how data can address social determinants of health.

NACCHO President and Executive Director of Harris County Public Health Dr. Umair Shah is this week’s guest on the NACCHO Podcast Series. Dr. Shah described his harrowing experience balancing his leadership role in public health and as a victim of Hurricane Harvey that ravaged his community and jurisdiction in Harris County, TX. Dr. Shah talked about the importance of public health emergency preparedness and hospital system preparedness programs that were integral in the response and recovery efforts following the hurricane.
